Camping at Smokemont Group Camp near Cherokee

Public campground · Cherokee · 3 campsites · 3 group

A forested campground near trout fishing, hiking, and mountain biking.

About this campground

From the group site you can step directly into the park's recreation network: short loops such as the Smokemont Loop Trail and the Bradley Fork Trail begin nearby, and the Bradley Fork River is an easy spot for splashing and trout fishing. The Smokies' 800+ miles of maintained trails, plentiful auto-touring routes, horseback riding corridors and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities (the park is home to roughly 1,500 black bears, plus deer, elk and a huge diversity of plants and smaller creatures) are all part of the experience.

We stayed at one of the group sites (which we loved!). The bathrooms had toilet paper the entire time, but no hand soap. We stayed in June, so had rain every day periodically over a 3-day stay. Spinner lures were useless (constantly hung up on rocks) so plan on fly fishing only. Several teens had a great time tubing. Will definitely book again!

We had a men’s camping trip with a group from our church. We reserved the group site and a couple individual sites. The place was perfect for hiking, fishing and just relaxing. We were able to ride to the welcome center that was close and check out the Elk. Cherokee was a great spot for dinner and breakfast. Highly recommend.

Felt like a detention center, our group was regarded with suspicion and harrasment. We were constantly being checked up on by the camp host. When we arrived, instead of asking if we had reservations they assumed we were trespassing and tried to kick us out. They also filed a complaint to the rangers office because of “speeding on a public road” (we were not) outside the park in maggie valley. Additionally we were cited for leaving an EMPTY cooler outside due to bear risk. Really felt discriminated against due to our race. I have been camping across the carolinas, southwest, and upstate NY for over 15 years and I have never been treated with such disrespect. Will not be visiting again and will stick to US Forest Service campgrounds, and backpacking on the AT.
