Camping at Summit Lake South near Mineral

Public campground · Mineral · 45 campsites

A forested campground near fishing, and hiking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

The Summit Lake area is a hub for hiking and backpacking one of the park's major trails lies only a quarter-mile from the campground, and the Cluster Lakes loop trail and Summit Lake Ranger Station are a short walk away; birders and packrafters use that route to access several alpine lakes. Summit Lake itself offers water-based recreation within easy reach of your campsite fishing, paddling and swimming are all common in season and the campground is the closest developed site to the Lassen Peak Trail and is within about 10 miles of the hydrothermal Bumpass Hell area.

“Loved this campsite and its kinda in the middle of the park so it made it nice and easy to get to where you want to go. ”

Eric W 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Was a really nice site. My only negative was that the parking spot wasn’t as level as it could have been so I needed to put one tire on a large rock to level my camper. I was last minute and it was the only site available for 2 nights. ”

How far ahead to book Summit Lake South

For July weekends, book about 175 days ahead. Three in four July Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 143 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (12,664 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
