Camping at Burning Bear Campground near Morrison

Public campground · Morrison · 13 campsites

A forested campground near hiking, and mountain biking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

At 9,813 feet along the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway, Burning Bear Campground sits in a wide valley where scattered ponderosa pines break up open meadows and provide pockets of privacy. The campground is about five miles north of Grant on Park County Road 62 and roughly seven miles south of the Mount Bierstadt approach, so it's a convenient base for high-country drives, landscape photography and wildlife watching bighorn sheep, elk, deer, moose, marmots and pikas are regularly reported along the pass.

“Camped at Burning Bear for 3 days... bathroom was clean, campground was clean and reasonably quiet for the number of campers....campsites are pretty close together but that wasn't a problem.”

Donald B 5 · Jul 2025 · Recreation.gov

“The camping area was well maintained. The camp host was very pleasant and welcoming.”

How far ahead to book Burning Bear Campground

For July weekends, book about 179 days ahead. Three in four July Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 141 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (2,255 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
