Where should you camp?

The park is several campgrounds with different entrances, not one village. Start with whether you need water on site, then pick the scenery.

Joshua Tree camping areas and gateway townsNumbered camping areas on the Joshua Tree National Park boundary: Black Rock, Indian Cove, Jumbo Rocks, Cottonwood, and the town of Joshua Tree outside the park.JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK1Black Rock2Indian Cove3Jumbo Rocks4Cottonwood5Joshua TreeTwentynine PalmsYucca Valley

1Black Rock & the west entranceWater, flush toilets, and a dump station

Black Rock sits at about 4,000 feet on the park’s northwest edge, in one of the thicker Joshua tree stands, with its own entrance from Yucca Valley. It is the practical base when you want drinking water inside the park. You drive back out to Highway 62 to reach the main park roads.

2Indian Cove & the north sideRock formations on a separate entrance

Indian Cove’s sites sit among boulders on the north boundary, with their own entrance off Highway 62 near Twentynine Palms. There is no water in camp. It is a strong choice for climbers, and a poor one if you expect to walk to the park’s central viewpoints without driving.

3The center: Jumbo Rocks & RyanThe boulder scenery most people picture

Jumbo Rocks and Ryan are the reservation campgrounds among the central rock piles. Hidden Valley, a short way west, is first-come, first-served and often full by Friday afternoon from September through May. None of these sites have drinking water.

Along Park Boulevard, inside the park · Hidden Valley is open year-round; White Tank and Belle, also first-come, close for part of the summer

4Cottonwood & the south entranceWater, flush toilets, and a quieter south end

Cottonwood is the south-entrance campground, lower and more open Colorado Desert than the boulder piles up north. It has drinking water, flush toilets, and the park’s other dump station. The Pinto Basin drive between here and the center is long; don’t treat it as a quick hop.

5Outside the parkHookups, showers, and a backup when the park is full

No park campground has showers or electric hookups. When weekend sites are gone — NPS says they usually are from September through May — private campgrounds in the gateway towns are the honest fallback. You will drive in through an entrance each day.

When to go

NPS calls October through May the busy season. Summer is a different park: hotter, with a campfire ban and possible campground closures.

Fall · October–November

The busy season starts again

Weekends fill from September through May. The campfire ban runs through October 1. Nights cool off after summer, which is why the reservation window matters again.

Good fit: October and November weekends if you can reserve near the 6-month mark.

Winter · December–February

Cool days, full weekends

Reservation campgrounds are typically open. First-come sites are still competitive on weekends and holidays. Bring layers; the point of winter here is the mild days, not a heated hookup — there are no hookups in the park.

Good fit: A reserved site at Jumbo Rocks, Black Rock, or Cottonwood.

Spring · March–May

The hardest reservations of the year

NPS says first-come campgrounds are full nearly every weekend from September through May, and most weeknights from mid-February into spring. Wildflowers, when they happen, pile onto that demand.

Good fit: Anything you reserved months ahead. Do not plan on a Friday walk-up.

Summer · June–September

Hot, with fewer services

Campfires are banned June 15 through October 1. White Tank and Belle close for part of the summer. Hidden Valley stays open. Reservation campgrounds can close in part or in full. There is still no water at Jumbo Rocks, Ryan, or Indian Cove.

Good fit: Only if you have confirmed the specific campground is open and you are equipped for the heat.

When to book

Most of the park’s roughly 500 campsites can be reserved the same day or up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov. From our booking data, April weekends are the earliest typical month: half of Friday and Saturday arrivals were reserved at least 91 days ahead, and a quarter at least 180 days ahead (8,417 weekend reservations, FY2023–2025).

CampgroundReservation releasePlanning note
Black Rock, Cottonwood, Indian Cove, Jumbo Rocks, RyanSame day, or up to 6 months aheadBook before you drive in. Cell service in the park is very limited, so don’t count on reserving from the entrance station line.
Hidden Valley, White Tank, BelleFirst-come, first-served · $25Full nearly every weekend September–May, often by Friday afternoon. White Tank and Belle close for part of the summer.
Sheep Pass, Cottonwood, and Indian Cove group sitesUp to 6 months aheadCottonwood and Sheep Pass group sites are tents only. Indian Cove group sites allow a small RV or trailer, 25 feet combined.
1

Pick the entrance, not just the name. Black Rock, Indian Cove, and Cottonwood do not connect to each other by a short in-park hop.

2

Filter by vehicle length. NPS says a rig that sticks into the road does not fit. White Tank and Hidden Valley are 25 feet combined. Belle is often 25–30 feet even though some sites reach 35.

3

Have a town backup. If the release is gone, a private campground with hookups is the legal overnight. Sleeping in a vehicle outside a campsite can be cited.

Before you reserve and before you drive

Joshua Tree camping is simple once you know where the water is and how long the rig can be.

Water and dump stations

Drinking water and dump stations are at Black Rock (near site 6) and Cottonwood (between the visitor center and the campground). The dump fee is $5. Jumbo Rocks, Ryan, Indian Cove, Hidden Valley, White Tank, and Belle have no water.

No showers in the park

NPS says none of the campgrounds have showers. Private campgrounds and businesses in town sometimes sell them.

Vehicle length

White Tank and Hidden Valley: 25 feet combined. Belle: up to 35 feet, but most sites 25–30. Reservation sites publish their own maximum. A trailer plus tow vehicle counts as two vehicles.

Fires and generators

Campfires are banned June 15 through October 1. Firewood is sold in town, not in the park, and you may not gather vegetation. Generators: 7–9 am, noon–2 pm, and 5–7 pm.

First-come sites

Hidden Valley, White Tank, and Belle are $25, paid by card at an entrance station within an hour of setting up. They are full most weekends from September through May.

Where you may sleep

You may sleep in a vehicle on a campsite you occupy. Sleeping along a road, pullout, or trailhead is not allowed.
