Camping at Lake Russell Recreation Area near Mt. Airy

Public campground · Mt. Airy · 41 campsites

A forested campground near fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Lake Russell Recreation Area sits in the North Georgia portion of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest around a 100-acre reservoir where the cool mountain air and a grassy beach make summer days especially pleasant. The campground gives you direct access to swimming, a boat launch and a fishing dock on the lake, and borders the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area for additional shoreline and wildlife-viewing opportunities.

“None of the showers at the camp ground worked and bathrooms where nasty ”

Jeremy H 2 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Loved this campground, bathrooms were clean. I had a very nice weekend here!”

Lainey P 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice campsite. Enjoyed the lake. Only a little trash on campsite from previous guests. Bathhouse was old and worn but OK. Leaking toilet supply line causing a puddle. Trash cans sparse around camp. Had to use dumpster?”

For May weekends, book about 26 days ahead. Three in four May Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 13 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (3,948 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
