Camping at Alturas Lake Inlet near Stanley

Public campground · Stanley · 27 campsites

A forested campground near trout fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Recreation at the campground centers on the lake: boating, water-skiing, paddling and shore fishing are all immediate options, with bull trout and Kokanee salmon reported in Alturas Lake. A 10-mile round-trip hike on the Alpine Meadows Trail begins nearby, offering canyon, meadow and alpine-lake views and good birding; the broader Sawtooth National Recreation Area contains roughly 750 miles of trails for longer hiking and biking.

“Great place. Beautiful hiking trails and bike trails everywhere. The camp host cleaned the bathroom twice a day!! The beach was incredible! I’m sure its crazy in the summer!!”

LeAnn M 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Campground was excellent. Camp Host was knowledgeable and helpful. Rest rooms were immaculate. Recommend hiking the Alpine Way trail to the lake. Paddle Boarding and swimming were great. The water is so pristine.”

Danny K 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Enjoyed this campground. It was clean and spacious with lots of outhouses and clean water. We used it as a base camp as we canoed surrounding lakes.”

How far ahead to book Alturas Lake Inlet

For September weekends, book about 183 days ahead. Three in four September Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 161 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (5,459 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
