Camping at Chippewa Loop

Public campground · 45 campsites

A forested campground near fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Recreation centers on Cass Lake itself nearly 16,000 acres in the Cass Lake Chain with sandy beaches and 27 miles of forested shoreline where boating, canoeing, water-skiing and swimming are popular and anglers pursue walleye, northern pike, perch and trophy muskie. The nearby Star Island complex, which contains Lake Windigo, adds about six miles of island trails for hiking and exploration, and on the mainland you'll find the Migizi Bike Trail and the Norway Beach Trail for biking and foot travel.

“Beautiful lake. Campgrounds are good, but the bathrooms and showers REALLY need to be updated! Gross!”

Peter S 4 · Aug 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Very disappointed to see that the local Native Americans have taken over a loop in the Chippewa Loop Campground. We have been staying in this loop with a group of friends for 10 plus years but may reconsider next year”

How far ahead to book Chippewa Loop

For May weekends, book about 176 days ahead. Three in four May Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 134 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (4,610 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
