Camping at Cape Point Campground near Buxton

Public campground · Buxton · 200 campsites

A forested campground near fishing, and hiking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Cape Point Campground sits on Hatteras Island in the village of Buxton, a short walk through the dunes to the point where the Atlantic meets the surf and where fishing and surfing have drawn anglers and boarders for decades. The campground occupies the narrow strip between rolling ocean-side dunes and one of the largest remaining tracts of maritime forest on the North Carolina coast, so mornings often begin with the rattle of surf and the occasional glimpse of white-tailed deer slipping through the trees.

“Would gave been better with federal employees on site…A beautiful, peaceful, level paved and grassy campsite with free roaming deer and a beautiful beach just steps away.”

How far ahead to book Cape Point Campground

For May weekends, book about 4 days ahead. Three in four May Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 1 day or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (13,804 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
