Camping at Ocracoke Campground

Public campground · Ocracoke · 131 campsites

A forested campground near fishing, and hiking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Ocracoke Campground sits on the ocean side of Ocracoke Island, a ribbon of barrier sand within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and is reached only by ferry or small aircraft. The site sits on sandy soil and is separated from the surf by a line of barrier dunes; because of that soft sand you should bring extra-long tent stakes.

“October is the best time to go. Mostly empty camping and the beach was very nice ”

Dean D 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“I've been camping at Ocracoke campground for quite some time and it never fails to disappoint! Wonderful places to explore, including the nature trail directly across from the campground, and many beaches, Ocracoke is magical! ”

Larissa O 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice campground, but the presence of gas RV generators running all the time makes sleeping difficult. Should break of the campground into tents & RV section so tent people can sleep. ”

How far ahead to book Ocracoke Campground

For May weekends, book about 91 days ahead. Three in four May Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 30 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (40,553 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
