What makes Camp Gateway distinctive is how many different experiences sit within easy reach. The campground is part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a 27,000-acre mosaic that includes beaches, salt marshes, ponds, woodlands and grasslands; within a short drive or ride you can visit Civil War era forts, restored historic aircraft displays and Cold War Nike missile sites, or head to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to look for migratory birds the refuge reports about 300 species across the seasons.
