Camping at Kelsay Valley Horse Camp near Idleyld Park

Public campground · Idleyld Park · 14 campsites

A forested campground near hiking, and mountain biking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Kelsay Valley Horse Camp sits where the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River threads through high Cascade meadows, a place where late spring often arrives with a sudden flush of wildflowers purples, reds, yellows and whites carpeting the open slopes. The campground doubles as a trailhead and is commonly used as a base for horseback outings: the Porcupine Connect Trail (1412A) leaves from here and links to the North Umpqua Trail (1414) and Windigo Pass Trail (1412), while the North Umpqua route continues southeast into the Mount Thielsen Wilderness and connects with trails such as Tolo Creek (1466), Lucile Lake (1459), the Maidu Lake Loop and even the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (2000).

“Campground host is super friendly and helpful. Most of the trails are blocked from downed trees but OET and BCH have secured a grant to hire a crew to clear all the trails this fall. One trail to Maidu lake is open and a small loop by the Campground also. ”

How far ahead to book Kelsay Valley Horse Camp

For August weekends, book about 117 days ahead. Three in four August Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 20 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (316 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
