“It was full of campers, but quiet and peaceful. The stars were amazing. My spot was clean, easy to get to, and close enough to the head. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.”

Nicholas D 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“It was peaceful there. Absolute quiet. It was a shame that the visitor's center was closed the days I was there.”

Scott M 3 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Bathroom was very clean even though we were there during the Schumer-shutdown. Campsites are laid out so that there is some privacy. It was windy on our second day, so we opted to cut the trip short. If traveling solo on the Mojave Trail bring a satellite communication device. ”

How far ahead to book Hole-In-The-Wall Campground

For September weekends, book about 72 days ahead. Three in four September Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 11 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (2,100 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
