Camping at Island Park near Sanger

Public campground · Sanger · 90 campsites · 2 group

A forested campground near trout fishing, and hiking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Island Park Recreation Area sits on the western edge of the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests where the Kings River widens into Pine Flat Lake, about a 45 60 minute drive east of Fresno along Highway 180 into Kings River Canyon. The lake stretches roughly 20 miles and offers 67 miles of shoreline; the reservoir created by Pine Flat Dam in 1954 holds up to a million acre-feet at full capacity and doubles as flood control and irrigation infrastructure for the valley below.

“Peaceful clean and relaxing. I went there Spontaneously and it was great choice. I’m definitely heading back there whenever I’m in Fresno. I recommend it!! ”

William A 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“The Internet description and photo of our reserved site was completely deceptive. We were parked in a pull-out just off the road. (really in the road) This was NOT what I was led to believe when I made the reservation.”

Jerold M 2 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Rangers are so personable and the campground is one of the cleanest I've been to!”

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (19,728 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
