Camping at Lake Powhatan near Asheville

Public campground · Asheville · 71 campsites

A forested campground near trout fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Recreation at Lake Powhatan centers on the water and the surrounding forest. There's a sandy swimming beach on the lake and calm waters where anglers fish for trout (personal watercraft are strictly prohibited to protect the lake's riparian ecosystem), while the French Broad River is also nearby for additional fishing and boating opportunities.

“My favorite site. Greenway in rear of site has large opening in forest. Allows me to receive 2 or 3 different over the air HDTV channels and at least one bar of Verizon service. ”

Stuart R 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Big wooded private sites! Bathrooms were exceptionally clean & pretty good water pressure! Staff of workers were really great! 20 min or so from Asheville! Can't wait to go back!”

How far ahead to book Lake Powhatan

For June weekends, book about 100 days ahead. Three in four June Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 41 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (48,231 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
