Camping at Gerle Creek

Public campground · 50 campsites

A forested campground near trout fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Most campsites have no hookups, and RV fit varies by site.

About this campground

Practicalities are straightforward but worth noting before you go: the campground is reached from Highway 50 and Icehouse Road, roughly a 50-mile drive east-northeast of Placerville, and sits upstream of Gerle Creek Divide Reservoir with Union Valley Reservoir and Loon Lake a short drive away for additional boating and fishing. Fees include a variable recreation fee for overnight camping and a non-refundable reservation service fee $8 online, $9 by phone, or $3 in person in addition to the site charge; a $10 processing/service fee is withheld from refunds for cancellations.

“The hosts were wonderful. The lake was serene and perfect for paddle boarding or kayaking. ”

Shirlee G 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice location and lake. Good place for families.”

Paul G 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“You should have kayak, paddle boards or anything that gets you in the water. Lunch on the island is nice if it’s not too crowded 😉. There are wonderful walks, and for the adventurers, there’s some great hiking in the surrounding National Forest.”

For May weekends, book about 181 days ahead. Three in four May Friday and Saturday arrivals were booked later than that, and half were booked 146 days or less before arrival. Past timing is guidance, not a guarantee of what is open now.

Months with fewer than 30 reservations of that kind are left blank. Sites where nearly every booking was made the day of arrival (pay on arrival) are left out. Closed seasons, windows not yet released for booking, and currently unavailable nights are separate from this history.

Based on Recreation.gov reservations, FY2015–2025 (9,175 reservations in the years scored). Counts reservations made, not nights actually camped: cancellations aren't in the data, and nights a site was closed count as not booked. FY2020–21 (COVID) are left out of the scores.
